India: British Colonialism, Transformation,
Commonwealth and U.S. Impact (S) India as an important member of the Commonwealth plays a significant role in the international system. As a nation India has deep roots in its precolonial history, but it is also a product of Western-style democracy and economy. First of all, the course concentrates, besides the cultural roots of premodern times, on the last four centuries from 1600 to the present, a period of very intensive intercultural processes. It provides insights into the structure of the British Raj, the meaning of resistance, the changing of social relations along the lines of caste, class, community and gender, the different positions of anti-colonial nationalism and the dynamics of de-colonization. Secondly, we will investigate India as a hybrid-culture and rising power, its current strategy of global engagement and the prospects as well as implications of integration into the future major power system. The reason for the resilience of India´s democracy is a historical intercultural process of evolution. In detail, we will discuss the India-U.S. and the India-EU relations in a global context regarding the historical and intercultural background and in that way we supplement the transatlantic viewpoint and gain a post-modern perspective of the globalizing world arena. |
